London, England — Tottenham Hotspur finally secured their first Premier League victory of the 2026/27 season with a 3-1 win over Coventry City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday, 19 October.
James Maddison marked his return to the starting line-up with a superb opening goal, while Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies also found the net as Roberto De Zerbi’s side climbed away from the bottom of the table.
The victory ended Tottenham’s 148-day wait for a league win and provided a much-needed boost after a difficult start to the campaign.
Maddison inspires Tottenham with brilliant opener
Tottenham started with some early uncertainty, allowing Coventry to threaten on the counter-attack. However, the hosts gradually found their rhythm and broke the deadlock through Maddison.
The England international, making his first start since May 2025 after a lengthy injury absence, collected a pass from Mohammed Kudus before curling a superb effort from around 25 yards beyond goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.
It was a memorable moment for Maddison, whose return offered Tottenham an important creative boost.
Spurs carried their advantage into half-time, although Coventry continued to show enough attacking threat to suggest the contest was far from settled.
Rudoni restores parity for Coventry
Coventry responded early in the second half, capitalising on a defensive lapse to draw level.
Jack Rudoni advanced down the left, exchanged passes with Caleb Yirenkyi and continued his run into the penalty area. After his initial effort struck Brandon Thomas-Asante, Rudoni recovered the ball and finished past Tottenham goalkeeper Antonín Kinský.
The equaliser increased the pressure on the home side, who had struggled to turn promising performances into results during the opening weeks of the season.
Tottenham, however, responded with greater urgency as they searched for a second goal.
Marmoush restores Spurs’ lead amid controversy
Tottenham regained the advantage through Marmoush, who produced a powerful strike from around 20 yards to score his first goal for the club since joining from Manchester City.
The Egyptian forward turned before unleashing an excellent finish beyond Rushworth, giving the home supporters fresh reason to celebrate.
However, the goal sparked protests from Coventry players, who believed Marmoush had caught defender Milan van Ewijk in the face with an elbow during the build-up. Referee Andrew Madley allowed play to continue, and VAR did not overturn the decision.
Coventry pushed for another equaliser, but Tottenham defended with greater determination in the closing stages.
Davies seals vital victory in stoppage time
With the visitors searching for a way back into the match, substitute Ben Davies delivered the decisive blow in added time.
The defender struck from just outside the penalty area to make it 3-1, easing the tension inside the stadium and securing Tottenham’s first league victory of the season.
Another major moment came when Dejan Kulusevski returned to competitive action after a lengthy spell out with injury. His introduction was warmly received by the home supporters, adding to an encouraging evening for the club.
Tottenham move off the bottom
The result lifted Tottenham to 16th place with six points from seven matches, moving them above Coventry, who dropped to 17th.
Although the performance was not entirely convincing, the victory offered De Zerbi evidence that his side can respond under pressure and take advantage of key moments.
Tottenham will now look to build momentum when they face Chelsea away from home on Saturday.
For Coventry, the defeat was a frustrating setback after a spirited performance, particularly given the controversy surrounding Marmoush’s goal.
