Tennis: Daniil Medvedev Defends Almaty Open Title to Boost ATP Finals Hopes

Almaty, Kazakhstan — Daniil Medvedev defended his Almaty Open title on Sunday, 25 October 2026, after recovering from a set down to defeat Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-3 in the final.

The top-seeded Russian claimed his fourth ATP Tour title of the season and the 25th of his career, strengthening his bid to qualify for the ATP Finals in Turin, Italy.

The victory also marked the first successful title defence of Medvedev’s career, adding another milestone to his 2026 campaign.

Basilashvili Takes Opening Set

Medvedev faced an early challenge against Basilashvili, who entered the final as a qualifier ranked 128th in the world.

The Russian saved two set points to force a tie-break but made costly errors at crucial moments. Basilashvili capitalised, producing a powerful cross-court backhand to take the opening set 7-6(6).

The Georgian was competing in his first ATP Tour final since 2022 and put Medvedev under pressure with his aggressive baseline play.

Medvedev Takes Control

The former world number one responded emphatically in the second set, winning 6-1 as he imposed himself on the rallies and forced Basilashvili into repeated errors.

Medvedev maintained his momentum in the deciding set, taking advantage of his opponent’s growing difficulties to move closer to the title.

Basilashvili missed a backhand drop shot that gave Medvedev his first match point before sending another shot wide, allowing the Russian to complete the 6-3 victory.

Speaking after the match, Medvedev said: “I was feeling fresh, I was feeling physically good... I'm happy to finally do it I guess.”

ATP Finals Qualification Race Intensifies

Medvedev’s triumph gives him an important boost in the race to reach the ATP Finals, the season-ending tournament scheduled for 15–22 November in Turin.

Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton have already qualified, while Jannik Sinner will miss the event because of injury.

Medvedev, who won the ATP Finals in 2020, is seeking another appearance at the prestigious eight-player competition after missing out last season.

The Russian will next compete at the Vienna Open, beginning on Monday, before turning his attention to the Paris Masters from 31 October.

Those tournaments will provide further opportunities for Medvedev to strengthen his position in the qualification race and secure his place in Turin.
