IKENNE, Nigeria — Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade was left in tears after suffering an injury during Nigeria’s 5-0 second-leg victory over Comoros in their 2028 Olympic Games qualifier at the Remo Stars Stadium on Tuesday.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward was forced off the pitch in the first half after a heavy challenge. Ajibade clutched her ankle in clear distress and was carried off on a stretcher before heading straight down the tunnel.
She had been one of the most influential players on the field before the injury, driving Nigeria’s attacks and showing her usual leadership and energy. Her premature departure came as a significant blow to the side, even as the Super Falcons went on to complete a dominant performance.
Folashade Ijamilusi was introduced as her replacement and made a notable impact, providing key assists for Uchenna Kanu’s goals later in the match.
Despite the setback, Nigeria secured a 5-0 win on the day and a 7-0 aggregate triumph, advancing to the third round of the CAF Women’s Olympic Qualifiers where they will face Morocco.
The full extent of Ajibade’s injury has not yet been confirmed. Medical staff will assess the damage in the coming days, with the Super Falcons and her club, Paris Saint-Germain, closely monitoring her recovery.
Ajibade remains one of Nigeria’s most important players and a key figure in the national team’s leadership group. Her absence, even temporary, would be felt as the Falcons prepare for a more demanding test against Morocco later in the qualifying campaign.
Fans and teammates will be hoping for a swift recovery for the captain as Nigeria continue their push for a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
