Madrid, Spain — Atlético Madrid secured a 2–0 victory over Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, with Pablo Barrios scoring inside the opening minute before Ademola Lookman struck late to punish the visitors after Leny Yoro’s dismissal.
Diego Simeone’s side took control early at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano and held their advantage despite periods of pressure from United. The result gave Atlético an important victory in the Champions League league phase, while Michael Carrick’s team were left to reflect on a costly defensive mistake and a red card.
Barrios strikes inside the opening minute
Atlético needed less than a minute to break the deadlock. Alex Baena advanced down the right and delivered a pass into Barrios, who finished past United goalkeeper Senne Lammens to put the hosts ahead.
The early goal forced United to chase the game, but the visitors gradually created opportunities of their own. Bryan Mbeumo tested Jan Oblak, while Marcus Rashford also threatened as United looked for an equaliser.
Atlético continued to pose problems going forward. Alejandro Grimaldo came close with a free-kick that struck the woodwork, and the hosts thought they had doubled their advantage before half-time when Johnny Cardoso found the net.
However, a VAR review ruled out Cardoso’s effort because of a handball by Marcos Llorente in the build-up, allowing United to reach the interval just one goal behind.
United threaten as the match remains open
United improved after the restart and came close to drawing level through Bruno Fernandes, whose effort struck the crossbar.Atlético also created opportunities, with Julián Álvarez hitting the post after receiving a pass from Barrios. Oblak remained alert when required, helping the Spanish side preserve their narrow lead.
For a period, the contest remained finely balanced, with United searching for a breakthrough and Atlético looking to exploit spaces on the counter-attack.
Yoro sent off after VAR review
The decisive turning point came in the 74th minute when United defender Leny Yoro was shown a straight red card following a VAR review for a foul on substitute Jonathan David, who was attempting to break through on goal.
The dismissal left United with 10 men for the closing stages and made their attempt to recover from the deficit considerably more difficult.
Atlético took advantage five minutes later. David worked his way into a shooting position, and although Lammens stopped his effort, the rebound fell to Lookman, who finished into the unguarded net to make it 2–0 in the 79th minute.
Oblak denies United a late consolation
United continued to search for a response despite their numerical disadvantage. Matheus Cunha had an opportunity to reduce the deficit late on, but Oblak produced a reflex save to preserve Atlético’s clean sheet.
The hosts managed the closing stages effectively, securing a two-goal victory and leaving United without a goal to show for their attacking efforts.
Atlético turn attention to their next challenge
The result provided Atlético with a valuable boost in their Champions League campaign. Barrios’ early strike gave Simeone’s men the platform they needed, while Lookman’s contribution ensured the points were secured after Yoro’s dismissal.
For United, the defeat highlighted the cost of conceding so early and the difficulty of recovering after being reduced to 10 players. Carrick’s side will need to respond in their next fixture as they continue their European campaign.
