Cleveland — The Tampa Bay Rays moved to within one victory of the 2026 World Series after defeating the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series on Sunday, 18 October.
Drew Rasmussen delivered an outstanding pitching performance, allowing just one run over seven innings as Tampa Bay secured consecutive road victories to take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.
The Rays established control early, scoring once in each of the first three innings before relying on their pitching staff and defence to withstand Cleveland's attempts to mount a comeback.
With Game 6 scheduled for Monday at Tropicana Field, Tampa Bay now have the opportunity to clinch their third American League pennant and first since 2020.
Rays make fast start
Tampa Bay wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, taking a 1-0 lead in the opening inning through Jonny DeLuca.
With two outs and the bases loaded, DeLuca drew a walk that forced home the game's opening run. Cleveland challenged the call, but the decision was upheld, leaving the Guardians trailing.
The Rays extended their advantage in the second inning. Jonathan Aranda delivered an RBI single to bring Ben Williamson home, making it 2-0 and increasing the pressure on Cleveland's pitching staff.
Tampa Bay added a third run in the following inning. Chandler Simpson doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Liam Hicks drove him home with a single to centre field.
The early scoring gave the Rays a 3-0 advantage and provided Rasmussen with valuable breathing room on the mound.
Rasmussen dominates on the mound
Rasmussen was central to Tampa Bay's success, producing seven impressive innings against the Guardians' offence.
The right-hander allowed four hits and one walk while striking out six batters. Cleveland managed only one run against him, with Rasmussen maintaining control for much of the contest.
After allowing a single to Chase DeLauter in the first inning, Rasmussen retired 15 consecutive batters before the Guardians began to threaten in the sixth.
Brayan Rocchio and José Ramírez recorded consecutive singles to put runners at the corners. DeLauter then grounded out to bring Steven Kwan home, reducing the deficit to 3-1.
Rasmussen responded by retiring Jo Adell to end the inning and later induced a double play in the seventh, completing a strong outing that left Tampa Bay in a favourable position.
Guardians threaten but Rays hold firm
Cleveland attempted to build momentum after getting on the scoreboard, but Tampa Bay's bullpen limited the opportunities available to the hosts.
Cam Booser and Tyler Wells helped navigate the late innings, with Wells producing an important strikeout of Ramírez to end a threatening eighth inning.
The Guardians continued to search for a breakthrough in the ninth, but Tampa Bay closer Bryan Baker entered to protect the two-run lead.
Although Baker encountered some late pressure after issuing a walk and seeing Cleveland reach base, he remained composed and recorded the final outs to seal the 3-1 victory.
The result gave the Rays consecutive wins in Cleveland and put them one game away from advancing to the World Series.
Tampa Bay one win from the World Series
The Rays' victory puts them in a strong position heading into Game 6, which will be played at their home ground in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Historically, teams that take a 3-2 lead in a best-of-seven League Championship Series have enjoyed a strong record of progressing to the World Series. However, Tampa Bay must still secure one more victory to complete the job.
The Rays are chasing their first-ever World Series title, having reached the Fall Classic previously in 2008 and 2020. Their immediate objective is to secure the American League pennant and book a meeting with the Milwaukee Brewers, who have already qualified for the World Series after sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series.
For Cleveland, the defeat leaves their season on the brink. The Guardians must win Game 6 to force a decisive seventh game and keep their championship hopes alive.
Game 6: Rays have chance to finish the job
Tampa Bay will return home knowing that another disciplined performance could secure their place in the World Series. Rasmussen's display in Game 5 has strengthened their position, while the offence showed its ability to manufacture runs early in the contest.
Cleveland, meanwhile, will need a more productive offensive performance and greater efficiency on the mound to extend the series.
With the Rays holding a 3-2 advantage, the pressure is firmly on the Guardians to respond.
