Lemgo, Germany — Odense Håndbold bounced back from a disappointing start to their EHF Women’s Champions League campaign with a commanding 35-18 away victory over German side HSG Blomberg-Lippe on Sunday, 11 October 2026.
The Danish side delivered an emphatic performance under interim coach Mark Strandgaard, responding to the dismissal of head coach Jakob Vestergaard with a dominant display that strengthened their hopes of reaching the knockout stages.
Odense dominate from the opening half
Odense established control early and went into half-time with a commanding 20-10 lead, leaving the German hosts with a substantial deficit to overcome.
The visitors combined effective attacking play with strong goalkeeping from Johanna Bundsen to keep Blomberg-Lippe under pressure throughout the first half.
Backcourt player Anna Vyakhireva and line player Romée Maarschalkerweerd led the scoring for Odense, finishing with six goals each.
Odense continued to extend their advantage after the interval, maintaining their intensity and eventually securing a 17-goal victory.
Interim coach makes an immediate impact
The victory offered Strandgaard a positive response after taking temporary charge following Vestergaard’s departure.
Odense had suffered a 26-23 home defeat against Norway’s Storhamar earlier in the month, a result that followed the coaching change and left the Danish club needing points to improve their position in Group B.
The comprehensive win in Germany provided a timely boost after that setback, although the team still face a challenging task in their bid to progress to the knockout rounds.
Kühne scores four against future club
Blomberg-Lippe’s Nieke Kühne finished as the German team’s leading scorer with four goals, but her efforts were insufficient to prevent a heavy home defeat.
The match carried an additional storyline for Kühne, who is scheduled to join Odense in the summer of 2027. The German backcourt player therefore faced her future club in a difficult Champions League encounter.
Despite Kühne’s contribution, Blomberg-Lippe struggled to contain Odense’s attack and could not reduce the gap significantly in the second half.
Odense keep qualification hopes alive
The result gave Odense five points from five matches in Group B, keeping their hopes of advancing to the Champions League knockout stages alive.
The Danish side will now look to build on the convincing win and establish greater consistency as the group phase continues.
For Strandgaard, the performance provides an encouraging start to his interim tenure, while Odense will hope the result marks a turning point in their European campaign.
