NNL Reschedules 2026/27 Season Opener as Heartland Host Crown in Owerri

OWERRI, Nigeria — The Nigeria National League has moved the opening fixture of the 2026/2027 season by 24 hours, with Heartland FC of Owerri now set to host Crown FC of Ogbomoso on Sunday, 1 November 2026.

The match, originally fixed for Saturday, 31 October, will take place at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri with a 4:00 p.m. kick-off. The one-day adjustment was confirmed by the league’s Chief Operating Officer, Danlami Alanana.

Alanana explained that the change was necessary because of important state events scheduled in Imo State on the original date. The decision aims to allow host state officials, local supporters and other stakeholders to attend in full force and properly usher in the new NNL campaign.

The fixture marks the formal start of the 2026/27 Nigeria National League season. Heartland, one of the traditional powerhouses of Nigerian second-tier football and long associated with the “Naze Millionaires” identity, will open their account in front of a home crowd. Crown FC travel from Ogbomoso for what is expected to be a competitive season-opening encounter.

League organisers have prioritised logistical and ceremonial considerations for the launch of the new season. By shifting the match to Sunday, the NNL seeks to maximise attendance and create a stronger atmosphere around the first competitive action of the campaign.

All 36 NNL clubs are preparing for the new season, with the opening weekend expected to set the tone for the months ahead. The rescheduling of the Heartland–Crown clash is the first major calendar adjustment announced for the 2026/27 campaign.

Further details on the full Matchday 1 schedule and other opening-weekend fixtures are expected to be confirmed by the league in the coming days.
