The Nigerian athlete claimed the $1,000 first prize after leading the field in the fifth edition of the road race in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
James leads men’s race
James finished more than 12 seconds ahead of his closest challenger, Ilya Raymond, who clocked 30:38.06 to take second place and collect $750.
Davwi Gyang Sunday completed the men’s podium in 30:47.00, earning the bronze position and a $500 prize.

James said he was delighted to see his preparation pay off after securing victory.
“I’m very happy with the victory,” James said, while expressing appreciation to the organisers for providing athletes with the opportunity to compete.
Akanbi wins women’s race
Akanbi Aderonke Olufunmilayo claimed the women’s title after completing the 10km course in 35:00.69.
She also received $1,000 for finishing first, with Bulus Mary Jah taking second in 35:58.71 to earn $750.
Nwantiyi Teyei Davou finished third in 36:03.09 and collected $500.

Fifth edition attracts athletes and spectators
The race was organised by Nilayo Sports Management Limited and attracted athletes, fitness enthusiasts, residents and dignitaries from across Abeokuta.
The official race information states that the 2026 event was scheduled for 3 October, with the road race starting at 7:00am.
The 2026 edition was designed as a strictly domestic event, with participation restricted to Nigerian athletes while maintaining the established elite prize purse.
The equal $1,000 first prize for the men’s and women’s winners was also highlighted by National Sports Commission Director General Bukola Olopade as an example of equality in sport.
The Abeokuta 10KM Race continues to provide a competitive platform for Nigerian distance runners while promoting road running and healthy living in Ogun State.
