MOMBASA, Kenya — Newly promoted Mombasa United claimed their first point of the 2026/27 SportPesa Premier League campaign after a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Kenya Police FC at Mbaraki Stadium on Sunday.
The barren stalemate at the coastal venue brought relief for the Sultans, who had endured a difficult start to life in the top flight following promotion. Both sides struggled to break the deadlock in a tightly contested encounter that lacked clear-cut chances.
Mombasa United entered the match still searching for their first points after consecutive defeats earlier in the season. A late loss to Kakamega Homeboyz on their top-flight debut and a subsequent reverse against Mara Sugar had left them rooted near the bottom of the table. Sunday’s result therefore represented a significant milestone for the coastal outfit as they continue their adaptation to the demands of the Premier League.
Kenya Police FC, meanwhile, arrived in Mombasa also in need of points. The visitors had managed just a single point from their opening fixtures and sat in the lower reaches of the standings. Despite being denied a training session at the venue the day before due to a local tournament, Police FC organised well defensively and limited the hosts’ attacking threat.
The match itself was a cautious affair. Neither side created a wealth of clear opportunities, with both defences remaining solid throughout the ninety minutes. Mombasa United enjoyed spells of possession on home soil but lacked the final cutting edge, while Kenya Police relied on disciplined organisation and counter-attacking intent that never quite materialised into a decisive moment.
The goalless outcome means Mombasa United open their points account for the season, providing a platform on which to build as the campaign progresses. For Kenya Police, the away point offers modest encouragement in their battle to climb the table, though both clubs will be aware that greater attacking output will be required in the coming weeks.
The result keeps both teams in the lower half of the early standings as the SportPesa Premier League continues to take shape. Mombasa United will now look to convert draws into victories on home soil, while Kenya Police will seek to turn solid defensive displays into maximum points on their travels.
The coastal side’s first point of the season may prove valuable in the long run as they settle into top-flight football.
