Mombasa United promoted to SportPesa League after FKF awards Kariobangi Sharks forfeited playoff

Nairobi, Kenya — Mombasa United have secured promotion to the 2026/27 SportPesa League after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) awarded them a 2-0 victory over Kariobangi Sharks following the abandonment of their promotion playoff second leg.

The FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee delivered its ruling on Friday, 9 October 2026, declaring Mombasa United the aggregate winners of the two-legged contest and confirming their place in Kenya’s top flight next season.

Referee assaulted as playoff descends into chaos

The second leg was played at the Ulinzi Sports Complex on Tuesday, 6 October, but was abandoned in the 64th minute after tensions erupted over a penalty awarded to Mombasa United.

Kariobangi Sharks players confronted the referee in protest against the decision. The situation escalated when Sharks kit manager Patrick Paul Otieno and some supporters invaded the pitch and assaulted the match official, according to reports considered by the committee.

The referee was subsequently assessed and declared unable to continue, forcing the match to be abandoned.

The incident was reported at Langata Police Station under Occurrence Book number 56/6/10/2026.

FKF awards Mombasa United a 2-0 victory

In its decision, the committee ruled that Kariobangi Sharks had forfeited the match and awarded Mombasa United a 2-0 win under Articles 3.3.2 and 3.3.3 of the Rules and Regulations Governing Kenyan Football (2019).

Mombasa United had won the first leg 2-1, meaning the ruling gave them a 4-3 aggregate victory and secured their promotion to the SportPesa League for the 2026/27 campaign.

Disciplinary proceedings to follow

While confirming Mombasa United’s promotion, the committee referred the incidents involving violence and misconduct to the FKF Disciplinary Committee for further action.

The referral leaves the disciplinary process to address the conduct surrounding the abandoned fixture, while Mombasa United can celebrate their elevation to Kenya’s top division.
