Dortmund, Germany — Borussia Dortmund suffered a frustrating setback after surrendering a two-goal advantage to draw 2–2 with Werder Bremen at Signal Iduna Park on Friday night, missing the opportunity to secure a fifth consecutive Bundesliga victory.
Dortmund appeared to have done enough to claim all three points after Daniel Svensson and Nico Schlotterbeck scored within five minutes late in the second half. However, Werder Bremen mounted a remarkable comeback, with Ludovit Reis and former Dortmund forward Niclas Füllkrug scoring in the closing stages.
Dortmund struggle to find breakthrough
The first half ended goalless despite Dortmund enjoying periods of pressure in front of their home supporters.
Werder Bremen goalkeeper Karl Hein produced an impressive performance to keep the hosts at bay, frustrating Dortmund as they searched for an opening goal.
Both sides continued to compete for control after the restart, but the match came alive during the final 10 minutes.
Svensson and Schlotterbeck put Dortmund in control
Dortmund finally broke the deadlock in the 80th minute when Daniel Svensson found the net after Fabio Silva’s attempted shot fell kindly into his path.
The hosts doubled their advantage five minutes later. Nico Schlotterbeck rose to meet a corner delivered by Joey Veerman, powering a header into the net to make it 2–0 in the 85th minute.
With Dortmund seemingly on course for another victory, the home supporters had every reason to believe the contest was settled.
Reis and Füllkrug complete stunning comeback
Werder Bremen refused to surrender and pulled a goal back in the 88th minute through Ludovit Reis, whose low strike from outside the penalty area gave the visitors renewed hope.
The equaliser arrived in stoppage time when Niclas Füllkrug struck in the 90+2nd minute, finishing a move assisted by Marco Grüll to complete Bremen’s dramatic comeback.
Füllkrug’s late goal was particularly significant because he had previously played for Dortmund, making his intervention a painful moment for his former club.
Dortmund remain top despite dropped points
The draw left Dortmund with 13 points from five matches, keeping them provisionally at the top of the Bundesliga table at the end of the encounter.
However, the dropped points gave their rivals an opportunity to close the gap, with Bayern Munich holding a game in hand.
For Werder Bremen, the comeback demonstrated their resilience and earned them a valuable away point after appearing destined for defeat.
Dortmund must now address their late-game defensive lapses as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures, while Bremen can take confidence from their impressive fightback.
