Málaga rescue late point against Espanyol as Adrián Niño strikes in stoppage time

Málaga, Spain — Málaga CF were denied their first LaLiga victory of the 2026/27 season after Adrián Niño scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to earn Espanyol a 1-1 draw at La Rosaleda on Friday night.

The hosts looked set to claim all three points after responding to an early setback, but Niño’s late intervention ensured the visitors left with a share of the spoils in the Matchday Eight encounter.

Bryan Zaragoza gives Espanyol early lead

Espanyol made a bright start and took the lead in the 12th minute through Bryan Zaragoza, who produced a powerful finish after a skilful run around the edge of the penalty area.

Málaga goalkeeper Ángel Fortuño had earlier been called into action to keep out the hosts’ opening attempt, but Zaragoza’s effort put Espanyol in front.

Málaga sought a response and worked to create opportunities, although Espanyol maintained their advantage as the first half progressed.

Málaga push for an equaliser

Málaga returned from the break determined to get back into the contest, knowing that another league defeat would extend their difficult start to the campaign.

The hosts continued to press for a breakthrough, while Espanyol attempted to protect their narrow lead and manage the closing stages.

With time running out, Málaga appeared close to suffering another frustrating result at home.

Adrián Niño strikes late to rescue Espanyol

Just when Málaga looked set to secure their first league win of the season, Adrián Niño scored in the 92nd minute to level the match at 1-1.

The late equaliser broke Málaga’s resistance and secured a valuable point for Espanyol, who had been unable to extend their first-half advantage.

The result left Málaga still searching for their first league victory of the campaign, although the late goal at least prevented another defeat.

What the result means

The draw continued Málaga’s difficult start to life back in the Spanish top flight, while Espanyol missed the opportunity to take all three points after leading for most of the match.

Málaga will now turn their attention to their next league fixture against Real Sociedad on 18 October, while Espanyol will look to build on the point gained at La Rosaleda.
