ILORIN, Nigeria — Kwara United came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Ranchers Bees of Kaduna in their Euromatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 7 encounter at the Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl of the George Innih Stadium Complex, Ilorin, on Sunday.
The Harmony Boys fell behind early but responded strongly after the interval to claim all three points in front of their home supporters. The result moved Kwara United to 10 points after seven league matches.
Ranchers Bees strike first
Ranchers Bees took an early lead through Jamilu Yusuf, whose effort from close range found its way past Kwara United goalkeeper Stanley Victor.
The hosts looked for an immediate response and came close to equalising when Sanni Mohammed found himself in a one-on-one situation, but his effort was denied by the Ranchers Bees goalkeeper.
Despite creating a number of opportunities, Kwara United were unable to find a way through before half-time and went into the break trailing 1-0.
Jerry Alex was withdrawn during the first half, with Stephen Gideon introduced as the Harmony Boys sought to improve their attacking threat.
Kwara United turn the game around
Kwara United returned from the break with greater urgency and were rewarded in the 51st minute.
Gidado Toyeeb rose highest to power a header into the net from a well-delivered cross by substitute Adeshina Gata, who had come on for Sanni Mohammed.
The equaliser gave the hosts renewed confidence as they continued to press for a second goal.
Their task was made easier when Ranchers Bees were reduced to 10 men after Faisal Sanni was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Gideon seals the comeback
Kwara United eventually completed the turnaround in the 79th minute.
Substitute Qudus Opeyemi initiated the move with a back pass to Aliu Ferinyaro, who delivered an inviting cross into the box.
Stephen Gideon rose above the defence and headed the ball into the net to put Kwara United 2-1 ahead, sparking celebrations among the home supporters.
The comeback victory was subsequently secured as the Harmony Boys held on for a valuable three points.
Gideon named Man of the Match
Stephen Gideon's decisive contribution was recognised after the match as he was named the Cyteck Man of the Match.
The award was presented to Gideon by the sponsor, Engr. Ahmed Olaide.
