Kasper Dolberg undergoes ACL surgery after serious knee injury

Amsterdam, Netherlands — Ajax striker Kasper Dolberg has undergone successful surgery on his right knee after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury, bringing his 2026/27 season to an abrupt end.

The 29-year-old Denmark international underwent the operation in Copenhagen on Tuesday, following the knee injury he sustained during a training session with the Danish national team during the September international break.

Dolberg begins lengthy rehabilitation

Ajax confirmed that Dolberg will remain in Denmark initially to allow his knee to recover from the operation before returning to Amsterdam to continue his rehabilitation with the club.

The striker confirmed that the surgery on his ACL went well but described the injury as a major setback.

Dolberg is now facing a lengthy rehabilitation programme and will not play again for Ajax this season.

Injury occurred during Denmark training

Dolberg had returned to the Denmark squad after almost a year away from international duty when the injury struck.

He suffered the problem during training on 22 September, forcing him to withdraw from the national team camp and return to Ajax. At the time, the full extent of the injury was not immediately known, although the Danish Football Association indicated that he would be unavailable for an extended period.

Further examinations subsequently confirmed the severity of the injury and the need for surgery.

Major blow for Ajax

The injury is a significant setback for Ajax, particularly with Dolberg having established himself as an important attacking option since returning to Amsterdam in 2025.

The Danish forward originally joined Ajax from Silkeborg in 2015 and made his first-team debut in 2016. During his first spell, he made 119 official appearances and scored 45 goals, before leaving for OGC Nice.

He returned to Ajax in the summer of 2025.

Dolberg had made a positive start to the season

Before his injury, Dolberg had featured regularly for Ajax under head coach Míchel.

He had registered two goals and three assists in the Eredivisie this season, according to current player statistics, before the knee injury brought his campaign to a premature end.

Ajax will now have to manage the remainder of the season without one of their senior strikers, with Tolu Arokodare and Marcos Leonardo among the attacking options available to the Amsterdam club.

For Dolberg, the immediate priority is recovery, with the Denmark international set to begin the long road back from a serious ACL injury.
