Iga Swiatek reaches Wuhan Open quarter-finals as Muchova and Jovic crash out

Wuhan, China — Iga Swiatek continued her impressive run at the 2026 Wuhan Open with a straight-sets victory over Ashlyn Krueger on Thursday, while Karolina Muchova and Iva Jovic suffered disappointing exits from the WTA 1000 tournament.

The seventh-seeded Swiatek defeated American lucky loser Krueger 6-1, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals for the second consecutive year and record the 150th WTA 1000 match victory of her career.

The six-time Grand Slam champion remains in contention for another major title at this level as she looks to strengthen her chances of qualifying for the season-ending WTA Finals.

Swiatek reaches another career milestone

Swiatek dominated the opening set against Krueger before facing a tougher challenge in the second. The American raised her level and applied pressure, but the Polish star maintained her composure to complete the victory in straight sets.

The win placed Swiatek among an exclusive group of players to have recorded 150 victories within their first 50 main-draw appearances at WTA 1000 events. Only Martina Hingis and Serena Williams had previously achieved that milestone.

Speaking after the match, Swiatek said she was pleased with her ability to adjust and play bravely when required.

She will face American Ann Li in the quarter-finals after Li defeated Indonesia’s Janice Tjen 6-1, 7-6(1).

Chwalinska sends Jovic packing

Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska produced one of the tournament’s notable results by defeating 10th seed Iva Jovic 6-4, 6-1.

Jovic, the American world number 11, was unable to find a response after losing the opening set as Chwalinska took control to secure a place in the last eight.

Chwalinska will next face Greece’s Maria Sakkari, who also progressed to the quarter-finals.

Shnaider eliminates Muchova

Diana Shnaider continued her strong campaign by defeating sixth seed Karolina Muchova 7-5, 6-3.

The Russian’s victory marked her fourth career win against a top-10 opponent and ended Muchova’s hopes of progressing further in Wuhan.

Shnaider will meet Jelena Ostapenko in the quarter-finals after the Latvian defeated Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in three sets.

Kartal and Svitolina advance

British player Sonay Kartal delivered a commanding performance to eliminate 15th seed Jasmine Paolini 6-2, 6-0.

Kartal, who had earlier knocked out ninth seed Belinda Bencic, secured another significant victory to reach the quarter-finals, where she will face Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina.

Svitolina booked her place in the last eight with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Chinese wild card Guo Hanyu.

Wuhan Open sees more big names fall

The latest results followed the earlier exits of top seed Aryna Sabalenka and second seed Jessica Pegula, leaving the Wuhan draw without two of its highest-profile contenders.

Swiatek is now among the leading names still competing for the title, although she faces a challenging route through the remaining rounds.

With the quarter-finals approaching, the tournament continues to provide opportunities for emerging players to make their mark against established stars on the WTA Tour.
