Guinea edge Kenya as Serhou Guirassy seals AFCON 2027 qualifying victory

Guinea secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Kenya in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying clash at the Stade du 28 Septembre in Conakry on Thursday, 1 October.

Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy scored the decisive goal in the 32nd minute, giving the Syli National a crucial three points in Group D.

Guinea had threatened before breaking the deadlock, with Guirassy seeing an earlier free-kick strike the post. Kenya also created opportunities, but Guinea’s goalkeeper Mohamed Camara denied Micah Obiero early in the match and later kept out Ryan Ogam’s effort after the interval.

Kenya pushed for an equaliser in the second half, but Guinea held firm to claim their first win of the qualifying campaign.

The result moved Guinea onto three points in Group D, while Kenya remained on one point after opening their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Eritrea. Kenya have already secured a place at AFCON 2027 as co-hosts alongside Uganda and Tanzania; the group’s remaining qualification place is contested by Guinea, South Africa and Eritrea.

Full-time result

• Guinea: 1 – Serhou Guirassy 32'

• Kenya: 0

Guinea will look to build on the victory in their next qualifying fixture, while Kenya will aim to respond when they face South Africa.

What do you make of Guinea’s performance? Did the hosts do enough to deserve the win, or could Kenya have taken something from the match?
