Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso — Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have been eliminated from the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Championship after drawing 1–1 with Côte d’Ivoire in their decisive Group B encounter on Saturday, 17 October 2026.
The result ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals and qualifying for the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, which also serves as the qualification route to the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Head coach Eboboritse Uwejamomere’s side entered the encounter needing a victory after suffering a 2–1 defeat against Niger Republic in their opening match. However, despite a late fightback, the five-time world champions could not secure the three points required to keep their campaign alive.
Côte d’Ivoire Strike First
Nigeria started positively and looked to put pressure on the Ivorian defence from the opening minutes.
Godswill Usoro came close to giving the Golden Eaglets an early advantage, but his ninth-minute effort narrowly missed the target.
The Ivorians gradually settled into the contest and punished Nigeria on the counter-attack. Alex Fousseni broke the deadlock in the 16th minute, giving Côte d’Ivoire a crucial lead and placing further pressure on the Nigerian youngsters.
The Golden Eaglets attempted to respond before half-time, but their lack of composure in front of goal prevented them from converting their opportunities.
Mubarak Fasiu also missed a promising chance to restore parity as Côte d’Ivoire went into the interval ahead.
Late Equaliser Fails to Save Nigeria
Nigeria increased their attacking intensity in the second half, knowing that anything short of victory would end their qualification hopes.
The Eaglets pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Côte d’Ivoire remained organised and attempted to protect their advantage.
Their persistence eventually paid off in the closing stages when substitute Abiodun John scored with approximately two minutes of normal time remaining.
The late goal gave Nigeria renewed hope of completing a comeback, but the team could not find the winner before the final whistle.
The match ended 1–1, confirming Nigeria’s elimination at the group stage.
Another Major Setback for Nigeria’s Youth Football
The early exit represents another disappointing chapter for the Golden Eaglets, one of the most successful teams in FIFA U-17 World Cup history.
Nigeria have won the U-17 World Cup five times, but their latest failure means they will miss the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations and the accompanying World Cup qualification opportunity.
The team had entered the tournament hoping to return to the continental competition after missing the previous two editions.
However, the opening defeat against Niger and the inability to beat Côte d’Ivoire proved decisive.
The results will raise further questions about Nigeria’s youth football development, preparation and ability to translate their historical pedigree into success at regional level.
