France held to 1-1 draw by Italy in Zidane’s first home match

France were held to a 1-1 draw by Italy in the UEFA Nations League on Friday as Zinedine Zidane’s first home match as Les Bleus manager ended without a victory at the Stade de France.

Michael Olise gave France the lead in the 55th minute with a superb finish after Rayan Cherki rolled a free-kick into his path. The Bayern Munich forward struck from outside the penalty area, with his effort going in off the underside of the crossbar.

Italy responded in the 68th minute when Alessandro Bastoni capitalised on a mistake in France’s build-up. The Inter Milan defender dispossessed Lucas Da Cunha before advancing and firing past Mike Maignan to restore parity.

France continued to push for a second goal, with Eduardo Camavinga forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into a late save. The Italy goalkeeper produced several important interventions as the visitors held on for a point.

France were reduced to 10 men in the 85th minute when Dayot Upamecano received a second yellow card. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Les Bleus continued to threaten but could not find a winner.

The draw ended Zidane’s perfect start as France manager. The former France captain had previously guided his team to 1-0 victories away to Türkiye and Belgium during the international window.

France remain top of Nations League Group A1 with seven points from three matches, one point ahead of Belgium. Italy have four points, while Türkiye remain without a point.

France will next face Belgium on Monday, October 5, while Italy will host Türkiye on the same day.
