Flamingos Fall to Poland Despite Late Fightback in FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Opener

Rabat, Morocco — Nigeria’s Flamingos began their 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign with a disappointing 2–1 defeat against Poland on Saturday, 17 October, despite a late goal that briefly raised hopes of a comeback.

Poland scored once in each half through Wiktoria Skrzypczak and Natalia Skrok before substitute Oluebube Umejiaku pulled one back for Nigeria in the 79th minute.

The Flamingos pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages but could not find a breakthrough, leaving head coach Akeem Busari’s side without a point from their opening Group B fixture.

Poland Take First-Half Lead from the Penalty Spot

Nigeria started positively and created opportunities to take the lead during an encouraging opening period.

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi tested Poland’s defence in the 18th minute, while Queen Joseph also threatened as the Flamingos looked to exploit spaces in the opposition back line.

However, Poland gradually gained control and broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute.

Following a Video Support review of an incident involving Nigerian defender Ohunene Sunday and a Polish attacker, the referee awarded a penalty.

Skrzypczak stepped up and converted from the spot to give Poland the advantage.

Nigeria attempted to respond before half-time, with Mary Dunstan, Joseph and Elizabeth Adesuyi all involved in promising attacking moves, but none could find the equaliser.

Skrok Doubles Poland’s Advantage

The Flamingos returned for the second half determined to get back into the contest, but Poland continued to threaten.

The European side initially thought they had doubled their advantage in the 63rd minute, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.

Two minutes later, however, Poland made it 2–0.

Skrok capitalised on a poor clearance by the Nigerian defence and finished to put her team in a commanding position.

The second goal left Nigeria facing a difficult challenge, forcing Busari to make changes in an attempt to revive the team’s attacking threat.

Umejiaku Gives Nigeria Hope

Busari introduced Oluebube Umejiaku and Awawu Bashiru in the 68th minute, replacing Harmony Chidi and Mary Dunstan.

Kanyinsola Yusuf and Precious Oscar subsequently entered the game as Nigeria searched for a way back.

The substitutions helped improve the Flamingos’ attacking threat, and Umejiaku made an immediate impact by scoring in the 79th minute.

Her goal reduced the deficit to 2–1 and gave Nigeria renewed hope of salvaging a result.

The Flamingos continued to press for an equaliser, while a potential penalty appeal involving Kemi Adegbuyi was reviewed in the 86th minute. The referee maintained the original decision, leaving Nigeria to continue their search for a second goal.

Despite their late pressure, Poland held firm to secure all three points.

Flamingos Must Respond Against Puerto Rico

The defeat leaves Nigeria needing a strong response in their remaining Group B matches if they are to keep their hopes of progressing in the tournament alive.

The Flamingos will face Puerto Rico on Tuesday, 20 October, before taking on Korea DPR on Friday, 23 October.

Puerto Rico also lost their opening match, suffering a 6–0 defeat against defending champions Korea DPR.

Nigeria will therefore have an opportunity to recover against Puerto Rico, but they must improve their defensive organisation and take greater advantage of their attacking opportunities.

The Flamingos have shown that they can create chances, but their inability to convert those opportunities and the defensive mistakes against Poland proved costly.
