Seville, Spain — Barcelona strengthened their position at the top of La Liga on Saturday, 17 October 2026, after producing an impressive 5-2 victory over Real Betis at Estadio La Cartuja.
Lamine Yamal starred with an early opener and an assist, while Rodri, Gabriel Jesus, Eric García and Dani Olmo also found the net as Hansi Flick’s side maintained their perfect league record with a ninth consecutive win.
The seven-goal contest featured attacking football, a disallowed Betis goal and a red card that helped Barcelona take control in the second half.
Yamal sets the tone in Seville
Barcelona made a fast start, taking the lead in the 10th minute when Yamal cut inside and curled a superb finish into the top corner.
Real Betis responded strongly and drew level through Valentín Gómez, who headed home from a Pablo Fornals cross in the 27th minute.
The hosts continued to threaten, but Barcelona restored their advantage in the 41st minute. Rodri rose to meet Fermín López’s delivery from a corner and headed home his first goal for the Catalan club.
Betis thought they had equalised again before half-time when Giovani Lo Celso scored with a spectacular effort. However, the goal was ruled out following a VAR review after a handball by Cucho Hernández earlier in the move. Barcelona went into the interval leading 2-1.
Gabriel Jesus extends Barcelona’s lead
Barcelona increased their advantage shortly after the restart. Gabriel Jesus finished from close range in the 51st minute after Yamal supplied the final pass.
Betis refused to give up and quickly reduced the deficit. Ez Abde raced forward and finished in the 53rd minute to make it 3-2, giving the home supporters renewed hope.
However, the match changed dramatically when Facundo Bernal was shown a straight red card in the 54th minute following an altercation involving Yamal. The dismissal left Betis with 10 men and made their attempt to recover considerably harder.
Eric García and Dani Olmo seal the win
Barcelona capitalised on their numerical advantage to restore a two-goal cushion in the 62nd minute. Eric García finished from close range after Pau Cubarsí helped the ball into his path following a set-piece situation.
The visitors continued to create chances as Betis struggled to contain their movement and passing. Dani Olmo then put the result beyond doubt in the 81st minute, finding the net from outside the penalty area to complete Barcelona’s five-goal performance.
The visitors saw out the closing stages to secure a convincing away win, although Eric García later left the pitch with an injury concern after Barcelona had used all their substitutions.
Barcelona maintain perfect La Liga record
The victory gave Barcelona nine wins from nine league matches, taking them to 27 points and keeping them at the top of the table. The club’s official report noted that the achievement equalled Real Madrid’s record start of nine consecutive league victories in the 1968-69 season.
Barcelona will now turn their attention to a demanding run of fixtures, with Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid on the agenda. Their next league match against Real Madrid offers an opportunity to extend their winning streak and establish a new club benchmark for the start of a La Liga campaign.
