Liverpool, England — Everton booked their place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with an impressive 3-1 victory over Newcastle United at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday, 29 October 2026.
First-half goals from James Garner and Hayden Hackney gave David Moyes’ side a comfortable advantage before Thierno Barry added a third after the break. Dan Burn scored a late consolation for Newcastle, but Everton held on to eliminate the 2025 competition winners.
The result sends Everton into the last eight, where they will travel to League Two side Fleetwood Town.
Garner breaks the deadlock
Newcastle made a lively start and threatened through Harvey Barnes, whose early effort was kept out by Jordan Pickford.
However, Everton gradually found their rhythm and took the lead in the 34th minute. Tyrique George pressed Amar Dedić into losing possession, allowing Hackney to move the ball towards Garner, who produced a composed finish from the edge of the penalty area.
The goal gave the home supporters something to celebrate and shifted the momentum in Everton’s favour.
Hackney scores first Everton goal
Everton doubled their advantage just before half-time through Hackney, who registered his first goal for the club.
The move began with Pickford quickly releasing the ball to launch a counter-attack. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall drove forward before the ball reached Barry, who delivered an excellent cross for Hackney to finish with a first-time effort.
It was a significant moment for the midfielder, who joined Everton from Middlesbrough during the summer.
Barry seals Everton's passage
Newcastle introduced Yoane Wissa, Joelinton and Anthony Elanga at the beginning of the second half as they attempted to turn the contest around.
The visitors enjoyed periods of pressure, but Everton remained organised and continued to look dangerous on the counter-attack.
Their third goal arrived in the 69th minute. Garner carried the ball forward and found Dewsbury-Hall, who advanced down the left before delivering a pass into the penalty area. Barry controlled the ball and finished confidently to make it 3-0.
Burn scores late consolation for Newcastle
Newcastle continued pushing forward and eventually found the net in the 88th minute.
A delivery from Joe Willock found Burn, who rose above his marker to head home and reduce the deficit to 3-1.
The goal sparked a brief confrontation involving players from both sides, with Burn, Joelinton and Everton captain James Tarkowski among those booked.
Newcastle could not find another goal before the final whistle, and Everton celebrated their progression to the quarter-finals.
Everton set up Fleetwood Town quarter-final
Everton will now face Fleetwood Town away from home in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, scheduled for the week beginning 14 December 2026.
Fleetwood secured their place in the last eight after eliminating Arsenal, creating an opportunity for Everton to move closer to a first major domestic cup final since 1989.
The victory over Newcastle will also provide a boost for Moyes’ team ahead of their next Premier League meeting with the same opponents.
