De Minaur to Have Scans in Shanghai after Groin Injury Ends Beijing Final

BEIJING, China — Alex de Minaur retired from the China Open final with a groin injury and said he will go to Shanghai for scans before deciding whether he can play the Masters.

The world No. 9 was trailing Novak Djokovic 7-6 (3), 1-0 when he stopped on Tuesday. He said he had felt fine before the match.

“I was feeling quite good, then I felt something midway end of the first set,” he said. “It gradually got a little worse. I felt something in the adductor. I don’t know what it is yet. I’ve got to get some more scans. My plan is to go to Shanghai and get scans.”

The Rolex Shanghai Masters begins on Wednesday. De Minaur is due to open against qualifier Federico Cina or Alex Molčan. That match now depends on the scan.

He called the rest of the week a success. “Everything except for the end was really positive. There was a lot of good tennis. I played some great stuff. I felt amazing on the court. A lot of confidence from this first week.” He had reached the final when Hubert Hurkacz retired with an adductor injury in the other semi-final.
