Chikitha Taniparthi’s bid for third Asian Games gold ends in quarter-finals

India’s Chikitha Taniparthi missed out on a hat-trick of gold medals at the 2026 Asian Games after suffering a narrow quarter-final defeat in the women’s individual compound archery event on Thursday.

The 21-year-old lost 144–143 to Indonesia’s Nurisa Dian Ashrifah at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square in Japan.

Chikitha had entered the individual event in impressive form after winning two gold medals on Wednesday.

She teamed up with Sahil Jadhav to win the mixed compound team gold, defeating South Korea in a dramatic shoot-off. The victory also secured India’s first quota place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games in the event.

She then joined Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Prithika Pradeep as India won the women’s compound team gold. The trio equalled the world record during their campaign.

Narrow defeat in the quarter-finals

Chikitha started slowly against Ashrifah, losing the opening two ends 29–30 and 29–30.

She levelled the third end at 29–29 before taking the fourth 29–26 to move back into contention.

However, a costly eight-point shot on her opening attempt of the fifth end proved decisive. She finished the final end 27–27, but Ashrifah held on for a one-point victory.

The defeat ended Chikitha’s individual campaign, but she leaves the Asian Games with two gold medals from the team events.

A breakthrough Games for Chikitha

The double gold represents a major achievement for the young Indian archer, who topped the women’s compound individual qualification with 705 points earlier in the competition.

Her mixed-team victory with Jadhav also secured India’s first LA 2028 Olympic quota place from the Asian Games in the debut of the compound mixed-team event.

Chikitha’s pursuit of a third gold may have ended in the quarter-finals, but her two victories have already made her one of the standout performers for India at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
