CHESHIRE — Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has suffered a burglary at his home while he was in Italy for the club’s 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como, with police launching an investigation into the incident.
The break-in occurred on Wednesday night, 21 October 2026, shortly after United’s defeat. According to reports, officers were alerted at around 8.30 pm local time after three unidentified men were seen acting suspiciously in the garden of a neighbouring property.
Cheshire Police confirmed that officers attended the scene but found no trace of the suspects. They subsequently discovered that a burglary had taken place and several items had been stolen.
Detective Inspector Dave Jarvis said an investigation had been launched and enquiries were continuing.
Fernandes’ family were not at home
Neither Fernandes nor his family were at the property when the intruders entered the house. According to a report by The Athletic, cited by Reuters, the suspects spent less than five minutes inside before police arrived.
Manchester United are supporting their captain and have asked for privacy for him and his family as they deal with the incident.
The stolen items have not been fully detailed in the police information cited by Reuters. Reports identifying specific valuables should therefore be treated with caution until officially confirmed.
Burglary follows difficult night for Manchester United
The incident came on a disappointing evening for Fernandes, who captained United during their 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como in Italy.
The Portuguese midfielder was substituted in the 67th minute, with Joshua Zirkzee replacing him as United struggled against the Italian side.
The defeat extended United’s winless run in all competitions to seven matches, increasing the pressure on the team during a difficult period.
Speaking after the game, Fernandes called on his teammates to show greater courage when playing under pressure and suggested that United needed to be more aggressive in their pressing.
“I think that, at times, we have to be braver under pressure and take the risk of pressing very high to make them uncomfortable, just as they did to us,” he said.
Police continue investigation
Cheshire Police are working to identify those responsible for the burglary and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The case adds Fernandes to the list of footballers whose homes have been targeted while they were away representing their clubs.
United will now turn their attention to their next fixture against Bournemouth, scheduled for Sunday, 25 October, as Fernandes and his family deal with the aftermath of the break-in.
