Bongi Mbonambi’s Sharks future in doubt as disciplinary probe continues

Durban, South Africa — Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi’s future with the Sharks has come under scrutiny as the veteran forward awaits the outcome of a disciplinary hearing over alleged misconduct.

According to reports in South African media, the 35-year-old is facing an uncertain future at the Durban-based franchise, with the possibility of his contract being terminated reportedly under consideration.

The hearing has been ongoing for several months, and a ruling from the presiding officer is expected within the next two weeks, according to a report attributed to Rapport.

Alleged breach of team rules

The disciplinary case reportedly relates to an incident during a pre-season team-building event at Bayala Private Safari Lodges, before the Sharks’ match against the All Blacks on 11 August.

According to the reports, head coach JP Pietersen had allowed players to socialise on Tuesday evening but expected them to focus on preparations for the return to training. Mbonambi and other players were allegedly involved in socialising into Wednesday morning.

The allegations have not been established as facts, and the final disciplinary decision remains pending.

Mbonambi remains unavailable for selection

Mbonambi has not featured for the Sharks in recent months, with injury problems also affecting his availability.

When asked about the hooker’s absence last week, Pietersen declined to discuss the matter in detail.

“Bongi is obviously not available. There is no comment on Bongi,” the Sharks coach said, according to the report.

The lack of clarity surrounding his situation has raised questions about when he could return to action and whether he will remain with the franchise.

Springboks future also in focus

Mbonambi’s situation could have implications for South Africa’s international plans, particularly with the Springboks preparing for their November Tests against Italy, Ireland and France.

The experienced hooker has earned more than 80 Test caps and played a key role in South Africa’s Rugby World Cup triumphs in 2019 and 2023.

Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus previously indicated that Mbonambi remained in his plans but needed to regain match fitness and receive medical clearance from the Sharks before being considered for selection.

For now, the outcome of the disciplinary process and Mbonambi’s fitness will be central to determining the next stage of his club and international career.
