Vantaa, Finland — Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt claimed one of the biggest victories of her career after defeating Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon 21-17, 21-13 in the women’s singles final of the 2026 Arctic Open on Sunday.
The 29-year-old produced an impressive performance to beat the tournament’s top seed and world No. 5, securing her second BWF World Tour Super 500 title and ending an eight-match losing streak against the former world champion.
Blichfeldt controls the final
Blichfeldt recovered from an early 3-2 deficit in the opening game, stringing together a series of points to move ahead 7-3. The Dane maintained her advantage with disciplined defence and consistent shot-making, eventually taking the game 21-17.
Intanon, who won the world championship in 2013 at the age of 18, tried to fight back in the second game. However, Blichfeldt continued to dominate the longer rallies and limited the Thai star’s opportunities to attack.
The match remained competitive until the score reached 11-11. Blichfeldt then stepped up her intensity, pulling away to lead 14-11 before closing out the game 21-13 to secure the title.
A significant milestone after injury setbacks
The triumph marked Blichfeldt’s first tournament title of 2026 and a major achievement following six difficult months of rehabilitation from knee and back injuries.
Her return to the top of the podium highlighted the progress she has made during her recovery, with the Danish player showing renewed confidence and resilience throughout the tournament.
The victory also represented her first win over Intanon after eight previous defeats in their head-to-head meetings, making the result especially meaningful for the Dane.
Blichfeldt builds momentum ahead of Denmark Open
The Arctic Open victory provides Blichfeldt with valuable momentum ahead of the Denmark Open, a BWF World Tour Super 750 tournament scheduled to follow in Odense.
Her performance in Finland demonstrated that she can compete with the world’s leading players after her injury-enforced absence. Beating a top-five opponent in straight games will also provide a significant confidence boost as she continues her return to form.
For Intanon, the defeat ended her hopes of claiming the Arctic Open crown, while Blichfeldt celebrated a memorable title on the international circuit.
