Bayern Munich throw away lead as Viking FK snatch dramatic Champions League draw

Stavanger, Norway — Bayern Munich surrendered a late lead to draw 3–3 with Viking FK in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, after Harry Kane’s brace and Luis Díaz’s goal had turned a two-goal deficit into an apparent victory.

Vincent Kompany’s side trailed 2–0 at half-time but produced a strong response after the break. However, Michael Olise’s dismissal left Bayern vulnerable in the closing stages, and Herman Haugen scored in the 90th minute to secure a memorable point for the Norwegian hosts.

The result was a setback for Bayern, who had opened their European campaign with a 5–0 victory over Bodø/Glimt.

Viking strike early and punish Bayern before half-time

Bayern made an uncomfortable start at the Lyse Arena, conceding after just two minutes. Gianni Stensness rose to meet Zlatko Tripić’s corner and headed Viking into the lead.

The visitors responded by pushing forward, with Konrad Laimer and Lennart Karl among those who threatened. Harry Kane also had an opportunity to equalise, but Bayern struggled to turn their possession into a goal.

Viking remained dangerous on the counter-attack and doubled their advantage in the 38th minute. Peter Christiansen raced through before finishing past Bayern goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, leaving the visitors with a significant deficit to overcome.

Despite Bayern’s territorial dominance, Viking went into the interval with a deserved two-goal cushion after making the most of their opportunities.

Kane inspires Bayern’s second-half comeback

Kompany responded at half-time with substitutions, introducing Dayot Upamecano, Alphonso Davies and Ismael Saibari as Bayern sought to change the course of the match.

Their revival began in the 54th minute. After Laimer was fouled inside the penalty area, Kane stepped up and converted from the spot to reduce the deficit.

The England captain struck again six minutes later, heading home Joshua Kimmich’s cross to make it 2–2 and complete Bayern’s comeback from two goals down.

Bayern continued to press and appeared to have turned the match around in the 71st minute. Laimer supplied Díaz, who finished from close range to put the German champions ahead for the first time.

Olise sees red as Viking fight back

Bayern’s momentum was interrupted in the 73rd minute when Olise was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. The dismissal gave Viking a numerical advantage and changed the balance of the closing stages.

Kompany’s side attempted to protect their lead, but the hosts continued to push forward in search of an equaliser.

Their persistence paid off in the 90th minute. Haugen rose to meet Tripić’s delivery and headed past Urbig, sparking celebrations among the home supporters and rescuing a 3–3 draw.

Bayern had scored three times after the break, but their inability to manage the final stages meant they left Norway with only one point.

Kane’s scoring run continues

Kane’s two goals extended his scoring streak to nine consecutive Champions League matches, according to Bayern’s official match report.

The striker once again demonstrated his importance to Bayern, converting the penalty before heading in the equaliser. Díaz also made a decisive contribution by completing the turnaround, while Laimer helped create the third goal.

Nevertheless, Bayern’s defensive errors and Olise’s dismissal proved costly. The visitors had worked hard to recover from their poor first half but could not hold on to their advantage.

Bayern turn attention to Leipzig and Arsenal

Bayern will return to Bundesliga action against RB Leipzig on Saturday, 17 October, before preparing for their next Champions League fixture against Arsenal.

Olise’s dismissal means he will be unavailable for the European meeting with the English side, adding another challenge for Kompany as Bayern look to recover from the dropped points.

Viking, meanwhile, will take confidence from a spirited performance against one of Europe’s leading clubs. The Norwegian side showed resilience after losing their two-goal advantage and earned a result through Haugen’s late header.
