The Nigerian runner finished ahead of a competitive field to claim the women’s title and the $1,000 first prize at the fifth edition of the road race.
Akanbi leads women’s field
Akanbi maintained her position at the front of the race before crossing the finish line in 35:00.69.
Bulus Mary Jah finished second in 35:58.71 to collect the $750 runner-up prize, while Nwantiyi Teyei Davou completed the podium in 36:03.09 and received $500.

Akanbi said the victory was particularly satisfying after the preparation that went into the race and praised the organisers for creating an opportunity for athletes to compete.
Equal prize money for men and women
Akanbi received the same $1,000 first prize awarded to the men’s winner, Musa Francis James.
The official race prize structure lists identical rewards for the men's and women's categories, with $1,000 for first place, $750 for second and $500 for third.
The equal prize money was also highlighted by National Sports Commission Director General Bukola Olopade, who described the approach as something that should be encouraged in sport.
Fifth edition of Abeokuta 10KM Race
The 2026 Great Abeokuta 10KM Race was held on Saturday, 3 October, with the road race starting at 7:00am.
The event brought together Nigerian runners, fitness enthusiasts and members of the public, while the 2026 edition was focused on domestic participation.
Akanbi’s victory adds her name to the list of winners of an event that continues to provide Nigerian distance runners with a competitive platform and significant prize money.
