United States Beat France 97-79 to Win 12th FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup

BERLIN, Germany — The United States won the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup for a record 12th time on Sunday, defeating France 97-79 at the Berlin Arena.

It was the Americans’ fifth consecutive World Cup title. They have not lost a World Cup match since 2006. Attendance was 12,233.

Breanna Stewart scored a game-high 22 points and took 10 rebounds. Jackie Young added 18 points, including four three-pointers. Caitlin Clark scored 12, with two threes after managing only one point in the semi-final.

France led 20-17 after the first quarter and by 14 points midway through the second. Gabby Williams had 16 of her 20 points before half-time. Dominique Malonga finished with 21.

The United States cut the gap to two points at the interval after Young and Clark hit late threes. They then outscored France 30-12 in the third quarter and closed 24-22 in the fourth.

France were appearing in their first World Cup final and were seeking revenge for a one-point defeat by the United States in the 2024 Olympic gold-medal match in Paris. They lost their composure after the break.

The Americans had looked vulnerable earlier in the tournament, coming close against Italy and Spain. No team had previously come within 20 points of France on their run to the final.

Spain took bronze with an 81-58 win over hosts Germany.

The United States’ winning run at World Cups now stands at 36 matches.
