BAMAKO, Mali — Malian side Real Bamako advanced to the second preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup after a disciplined 0-0 draw against Vitesse of Burkina Faso in the second leg of their first-round tie.
The result confirmed a 2-1 aggregate victory for Real Bamako, who had taken a valuable lead from the first leg.
Playing at home, the Malians produced a solid defensive display to shut out their opponents and protect their slender advantage. Vitesse pushed forward in search of the goal that would have forced extra time or penalties, but they were unable to break down a well-organised Real Bamako back line.
The goalless second leg completed a professional job for the Bamako club, who had done the hard work in the opening encounter by securing a 2-1 win. That result proved decisive as they safely navigated the return fixture without conceding.
Real Bamako will now prepare for the next stage of the competition, where the challenge is expected to intensify. Progressing from the opening round represents an important step for the side as they look to make a deeper run in Africa’s second-tier club competition.
For Vitesse, the exit ends their continental campaign at the first hurdle despite a competitive showing across the two legs. The Burkinabé side can take credit for making the tie closely contested, but they ultimately fell short against Real Bamako’s efficiency and defensive resolve.
The Malian club’s ability to manage the second leg carefully, prioritising structure and concentration over open attacking play, proved the difference. With a place in the second preliminary round secured, Real Bamako turn their attention to the next obstacle standing between them and a potential group-stage appearance.
The result adds another Malian representative to the advancing clubs in this season’s TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup as the preliminary rounds continue to take shape across the continent.
