Salah was ruled out of the fixture after Egypt’s technical staff agreed to rest the captain because the match will be played on an artificial-turf pitch. Egypt coach Hossam Hassan said on Monday that the decision was also made following a request from Salah himself.
Rabia takes over the captaincy
With Salah unavailable, experienced defender Ramy Rabia will wear the captain’s armband as Egypt seek their first victory in the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
Egypt opened their Group B campaign with a 0-0 draw against Angola in Cairo on Friday, leaving the Pharaohs with one point after the opening round.
Rabia will be expected to provide leadership as Egypt attempt to respond with a positive result in Juba.
Salah rested because of artificial turf
The Egyptian Football Association previously confirmed that Salah would not feature against South Sudan because of concerns over the artificial playing surface.
Hossam Hassan reiterated on Monday that the decision had been discussed with Salah before the Angola match.
The Egypt coach said the Liverpool forward had spoken to him about the Juba pitch and that both parties agreed that resting him was the preferred option.
Salah was substituted in the 60th minute of Egypt's opening qualifier against Angola.
Osama Faisal joins Egypt squad
Egypt subsequently called up Osama Faisal to reinforce the squad for the trip to South Sudan.
The Al Bank Al Ahly forward joined the national team after Salah was ruled out, while Nice defender Mohamed Abdelmonem also missed the trip because of concerns surrounding the artificial surface and his previous ACL surgery.
Egypt will therefore head into Tuesday's encounter without two notable members of their squad, but with Rabia taking responsibility as captain.
Egypt targeting first win
The Pharaohs currently have one point from their opening match, while South Sudan also need points after losing their first qualifier to Malawi.
Egypt will be looking to secure their first three points of the campaign when they face South Sudan in Juba on Tuesday as the race for qualification for AFCON 2027 continues.
