Pyramids FC thrash Gor Mahia 5-1 to reach CAF Champions League second round

Cairo, Egypt: Pyramids FC produced another dominant performance in the CAF Champions League on Sunday, defeating Kenya’s Gor Mahia 5-1 at the 30 June Air Defence Stadium to complete a 7-1 aggregate victory and progress to the next round of the competition.

The Egyptian champions had already taken a commanding 2-0 lead from the first leg in Nairobi and showed their superiority again in the return fixture, scoring three times before half-time before adding two late goals after the break.

• Pyramids FC: Walid El-Karti 27', Nasser Maher 37', Youssef Ibrahim 45', Mostafa “Ziko” Abdel-Raouf 90', Mahmoud “Zalaka” Abdel-Hafiz 90+2'

• Gor Mahia: David Okoth 45+3'

Pyramids broke the deadlock in the 27th minute when Walid El-Karti headed home to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

The Egyptian side doubled their advantage ten minutes later through Nasser Maher, who produced a well-placed finish from inside the penalty area.

Pyramids then appeared to put the tie beyond Gor Mahia's reach shortly before half-time when Youssef Ibrahim, popularly known as Obama, scored to make it 3-0.

Gor Mahia responded almost immediately. David Okoth pulled one back in the third minute of added time, giving the Kenyan champions a glimmer of hope heading into the interval. It was also the first goal Pyramids had conceded in six competitive matches since the start of the season.

The visitors needed a remarkable second-half comeback to overturn the four-goal aggregate deficit, but Pyramids remained in control and continued to create opportunities.

The hosts eventually put the result beyond doubt in stoppage time.

Substitute Mostafa “Ziko” Abdel-Raouf scored in the 90th minute before Mahmoud “Zalaka” Abdel-Hafiz added another two minutes later to complete a convincing 5-1 victory.

Pyramids march on

Pyramids' 7-1 aggregate victory sends the Egyptian side into the next round of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League preliminary stage.

The result further underlines Pyramids' strength on the continent after their recent success in African club football. They entered the tie as the reigning African champions and have now comfortably negotiated their opening Champions League assignment.

For Gor Mahia, the defeat brings their Champions League campaign to an early end. The Kenyan champions were unable to recover from the 2-0 first-leg defeat and were eventually beaten heavily in Cairo.

Pyramids can now turn their attention to the next stage of the competition as they continue their defence of their continental crown.
