JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Highly decorated coach Pitso Mosimane is set to be officially announced as the new head coach of Bafana Bafana on Tuesday, bringing an end to weeks of speculation surrounding the national team vacancy.
Veteran sports broadcaster Robert Marawa confirmed that the unveiling is scheduled for 12:00 local time. The appointment marks Mosimane’s return to the South African senior men’s national team more than a decade after his first spell in charge.
Mosimane previously managed Bafana Bafana between 2010 and 2012, taking over after serving as assistant to Carlos Alberto Parreira during the 2010 FIFA World Cup on home soil. His initial tenure ended following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
Since then, the 62-year-old has established himself as one of Africa’s most successful coaches. He guided Mamelodi Sundowns to domestic dominance and the CAF Champions League title, later repeating continental success with Egyptian giants Al Ahly, where he won multiple CAF Champions League crowns and guided the side to consecutive FIFA Club World Cup bronze medals. Spells in Saudi Arabia and Iran further added to his extensive CV.
The vacancy arose after Hugo Broos stepped down following South Africa’s historic campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Under the Belgian, Bafana Bafana qualified for the tournament for the first time in 24 years and reached the knockout stage for the first time in the nation’s history, highlighted by a memorable 1-0 victory over South Korea.
The South African Football Association’s National Executive Committee approved Mosimane’s appointment in principle on 8 August, but protracted negotiations delayed the formal announcement. Issues reportedly included contractual details, the composition of the technical team, image rights and Mosimane’s ongoing involvement with his soccer schools and media commitments. An agreement was eventually reached late last week.
Mosimane is expected to begin preparations immediately for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, with South Africa scheduled to face Guinea and Eritrea in September. He has already been involved in scouting work alongside trusted assistants Kabelo Rangoaga and Musi Matlaba.
The return of one of South Africa’s most accomplished coaches is widely viewed as a statement of intent as Bafana Bafana look to build on the progress made under Broos and establish themselves as consistent contenders on the continental and global stage.
