The Nigeria U-20 women’s side returned following a 1-0 quarter-final defeat to Colombia in Łódź on Sunday. Valerin Loboa scored in the second minute of stoppage time after goalkeeper and captain Christiana Uzoma had blocked her first effort.
Nigeria had been reduced to 10 players in the 77th minute when Kafayat Mafisere was shown a straight red card. Despite that, the Falconets continued to press and came close through Janet Akekoromowei, who struck the crossbar in the first half.
The result ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 2014. The Falconets are two-time World Cup runners-up but have yet to win the title.
Their campaign still included a statement performance in the round of 16, where they beat England 3-0. Tosin Rafiu, Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Mary Mamudu scored in that victory, with Uzoma also saving a penalty. Nigeria had qualified from Group F as runners-up, behind Spain and ahead of China PR on goal difference after also facing New Caledonia.
Coach Moses Aduku said the tournament had been valuable for the young squad. “This tournament is good for the young players. It gives them the ability to grow and reach the next level. I think, in Nigeria, we have seen the future of our players. And I think the future is very bright,” he told FIFA.
Ikpeme had earlier told the players they had done themselves and the country proud after the Colombia defeat. His presence at the airport, alongside other NFF officials, underlined the federation’s recognition of a campaign that mixed promise with late heartbreak.
The Falconets now turn their attention to the next stage of their development, with several players expected to push for senior recognition after impressing on the world stage.
