Mexx Meerdink was the hero for the Oranje, scoring both goals on his first start for the national team. The AZ Alkmaar striker opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 30th minute after Crysencio Summerville was fouled in the box.
Serbia equalised immediately after half-time through Luka Jović in the 46th minute. However, Meerdink restored the Netherlands’ lead in the 69th minute with a composed finish from inside the box after a precise pass from substitute Guus Til.
The victory gives Xavi his first three points as Netherlands coach following a 1-1 draw with Germany earlier in the window. Meerdink now has two goals in two international appearances.
Serbia remain without a point after two matches, while the Netherlands move onto four points in Group A2. The result provides a positive boost for the Dutch as they continue their Nations League campaign.
