Kohli finished on 139 not out from just 88 balls as the hosts chased down a target of 296 with 50 deliveries to spare in the first ODI of the three-match series on Sunday. The innings took him past the milestone previously reached only by Sachin Tendulkar.
Shubman Gill also scored a century, making 110 from 108 balls, as the pair shared a dominant 151-run partnership that effectively sealed the contest. Rohit Sharma and Gill had earlier put on 74 for the opening wicket before Sharma was dismissed. Once Kohli joined Gill, India never looked in trouble.
West Indies, put in to bat, made a strong start through Justin Greaves and John Campbell, who added 135 for the first wicket. Greaves went on to score a maiden ODI century. However, the visitors lost momentum after Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Campbell, and India fought back with four wickets for 22 runs in the middle overs. Yadav finished with figures of 4-40 on his return to the ODI side.
Amir Jangoo’s rapid 58 helped West Indies recover to 295, but it proved insufficient against India’s powerful batting line-up. Kohli sealed the win with successive boundaries, remaining unbeaten alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad.
The milestone comes days after Kohli confirmed he will retire from international cricket after the 2027 World Cup. Already retired from Test and T20 cricket, the former India captain continues to represent his country only in the 50-over format, where he remains the leading century-maker.
India now lead the series 1-0. The second ODI will take place later this week as Kohli continues his remarkable late-career form.
