Hossam Hassan Extends Egypt Contract Until 2030 After Historic World Cup Run

CAIRO, Egypt — The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has officially extended the contract of national team head coach Hossam Hassan until 2030, securing the long-term future of the man who guided the Pharaohs to their most successful FIFA World Cup campaign in history.

The 59-year-old former Egypt striker signed the new deal during a formal ceremony attended by EFA President Hany Abo Rida, Vice-President Khaled El-Darandaly, Secretary-General Mostafa Azzam, national team director Ibrahim Hassan (Hossam’s twin brother) and administrative director Walid Badr.

The extension comes after Hassan led Egypt to the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup — the first time the Pharaohs had ever progressed beyond the group stage. Under his guidance, Egypt also recorded their first-ever World Cup victory, a 3-1 win over New Zealand, before falling 3-2 to eventual finalists Argentina in a dramatic last-16 encounter after leading 2-0.

Hassan, who took charge in February 2024 following the dismissal of Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria, has overseen a clear upward trajectory. Egypt reached the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, finishing fourth, and have recorded a strong overall record of approximately 20 wins, nine draws and six defeats in 35 matches under his management.

The EFA stated that the decision was taken “in the framework of the association’s keenness to provide stability for the national team’s technical staff and to continue working during the next phase in accordance with the objectives and plans set for the national team.”

The new contract ensures Hassan will remain in charge through the next major international cycle, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers — which begin later this month against Angola and South Sudan — and the road to the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

Hassan had been working without a formal contract since February 2026 after his previous deal expired. The long-term extension represents a significant vote of confidence in the Egyptian coaching legend, who is widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest-ever players and a national team icon.

With continuity now guaranteed, Hassan and his technical staff can focus on building on the progress made over the past two and a half years as Egypt look to maintain their status among Africa’s elite and push for further success on the continental and global stage.
