Aston Martin confirmed on Tuesday that Alonso and Lance Stroll will remain its driver pairing for the 2027 season, meaning the duo will begin a fifth consecutive campaign as teammates.
At 45, Alonso is currently Formula 1’s oldest active driver and will race beyond his 46th birthday next July. The Spaniard joined Aston Martin in 2023 after spells with Renault, McLaren and Ferrari.
Alonso commits to Aston Martin
Alonso said he had taken time to consider his future before deciding to remain with the Silverstone-based team.
“Racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level.”
He also expressed his belief in Aston Martin’s long-term project, highlighting the team’s leadership, personnel, partners and facilities.
The new agreement means Alonso will continue working with a team that is undergoing a major technical transformation as it seeks to become a regular contender for victories and championships.
Stroll also remains
Aston Martin will retain Lance Stroll alongside Alonso, maintaining an unchanged driver line-up for a fifth straight season.
Stroll, the son of team owner Lawrence Stroll, joined the team in 2019 and will enter his 11th Formula 1 season in 2027. He has made more than 200 Grand Prix starts and has three podium finishes.
The team said retaining both drivers provides continuity and allows it to focus on its development programme.
Lawrence Stroll said Alonso and his son had been “a crucial part” of Aston Martin’s journey and praised the experience and knowledge they bring to the organisation.
Alonso's Aston Martin record
Since joining Aston Martin in 2023, Alonso has made 85 Grand Prix appearances for the team, recording eight podium finishes, including two second-place results.
Across his Formula 1 career, Alonso has made a record 440 Grand Prix starts and won 32 races. He captured the world championship with Renault in 2005 and 2006.
His latest contract therefore extends one of the longest careers in Formula 1 history.
A difficult 2026 campaign
The decision comes during a challenging season for Aston Martin.
After 15 rounds of the 2026 championship, the team had collected only three points, all scored by Alonso, and was sitting 10th among 11 teams.
Despite those results, Alonso has opted to remain part of the team's long-term project.
He has also indicated that the 2027 season may not necessarily be the final chapter of his Formula 1 career. Reuters reported that Alonso told Spanish newspaper AS that he did not currently expect 2027 to be his final F1 season and believed he could continue for several more years.
What the extension means for the 2027 grid
Aston Martin's announcement removes another major uncertainty from the 2027 driver market.
Alonso and Stroll will form one of the most experienced pairings on the Formula 1 grid, with the two drivers continuing together for a fifth season.
For Alonso, the immediate focus will now be on helping Aston Martin improve its competitiveness while continuing a career that began with his Formula 1 debut in 2001.
With his new contract secured, the two-time world champion's Formula 1 story will continue into 2027 and beyond.
