NAIROBI, Kenya — Egypt have earned Africa’s sole women’s volleyball place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games after beating hosts Kenya 3-0 in the final of the 2026 CAVB Women’s African Nations Volleyball Championship.
The Pharaohs completed a dominant campaign at the Kasarani Indoor Arena on Friday, winning 25-21, 25-15, 25-15. The result ended a 23-year wait for an African title — Egypt’s fourth overall after previous triumphs in 1976, 1989 and 2003 — and marked the first time the country’s women’s team have qualified for the Olympic Games.
Kenya, the defending champions and record 10-time winners of the continental championship, produced a determined first set before Egypt pulled away. The Malkia Strikers stayed with the visitors early on, but could not match Egypt’s attacking consistency once the second set began. The home side’s unbeaten run through the pool stage, a 3-0 win over Nigeria in the round of 16, a 3-1 quarter-final recovery against Algeria and a 3-0 semi-final victory over Cameroon ended in silver.
The defeat denied Kenya an 11th African crown and the direct Olympic berth that went with the title. Their run to the final was still rewarded. As finalists, Kenya joined Egypt in qualifying for the 2027 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Cup, with Cameroon taking the third African place after winning bronze against Rwanda.
Egypt did not drop a set throughout the championship. They swept their pool opponents and then beat Burundi, Tunisia, Rwanda and Kenya in straight sets. That consistency was the difference in the final. Kenya’s fight, particularly in a competitive opening set in front of a packed home crowd, underlined why the Malkia Strikers remain one of Africa’s standard-bearers even in defeat.
The Nairobi championship carried unusually high stakes. The continental winner claimed Africa’s automatic women’s volleyball quota for LA28, while the top three finishers booked World Cup places. Egypt leave Kenya with gold and an Olympic ticket. Kenya leave with silver, a World Cup place and the knowledge that they pushed the eventual champions before the gap widened.
For African women’s volleyball, the final closed a two-week tournament that mixed home expectation in Nairobi with a historic first for Egypt on the Olympic stage.
