Alphonse Omija Parts Ways with Étoile du Sahel Amid Unpaid Salaries Dispute

NAIROBI, Kenya — Harambee Stars defender Alphonse Omija has mutually terminated his contract with Tunisian side Étoile Sportive du Sahel and is now a free agent.

The 26-year-old centre-back’s departure comes amid a dispute over unpaid salaries at the Sousse-based club, which has been grappling with a severe financial crisis. Several players at the once-powerful Tunisian outfit have reportedly sought exits in recent months due to outstanding dues.

Omija joined Étoile du Sahel in September 2025 from Kenyan giants Gor Mahia in what was viewed as a landmark move for the defender. The transfer followed his strong performances for Kenya at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), where the Harambee Stars reached the quarter-finals for the first time in the competition’s history.

During that tournament, Omija scored a crucial header against Madagascar in the quarter-finals, though Kenya were eventually eliminated. His displays at the heart of the national team defence attracted interest from North African clubs and secured him the move to one of Tunisia’s most decorated sides.

Étoile du Sahel, 11-time Tunisian champions and a former continental force, have endured a turbulent period marked by financial difficulties. The club has faced challenges meeting payment obligations to players and former clubs, including an earlier dispute with Gor Mahia over Omija’s transfer fee that led to FIFA intervention and a registration ban.

After less than a year in Tunisia, Omija and the club have agreed to part ways. The defender is now free to seek a new club and is expected to attract interest from teams both in East Africa and further afield.

A product of the Gor Mahia youth system, Omija established himself as a reliable and composed centre-back during his time with the Kenyan champions before making the step up to North African football. His experience with the Harambee Stars and exposure in the Tunisian league will stand him in good stead as he enters the next phase of his career.

The termination ends a challenging chapter for the Kenyan international, who had hoped the move to Étoile du Sahel would provide a platform for further development. With his contract now cancelled by mutual consent, Omija can focus on finding a new home where he can continue his progress at club level while remaining available for national team duty.
