WASHINGTON, United States — US President Donald Trump has publicly urged FIFA not to replace President Gianni Infantino, describing any such move as a “terrible mistake.”
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Infantino had just overseen “the most successful World Cup, by four times, ever presented.” He added that if Infantino were to leave, the tournament “will never be as successful or profitable again.”
Trump’s comments come as Infantino faces growing pressure from several confederations following the aborted FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal, which sought to create a commercial subsidiary and sell a stake to private investors. UEFA, Concacaf and the Asian Football Confederation have accused the FIFA president of a breach of trust over the plan.
The intervention marks a strong public defence of Infantino by the US president, who worked closely with FIFA during the 2026 World Cup co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
