South Africa Edge Nigeria to Keep World Cup Hopes Alive

CASABLANCA, Morocco — South Africa defeated Nigeria 2-1 in a tense 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup play-off to secure a place in the inter-confederation qualifiers.

Thembi Kgatlana and Refiloe Jane scored the goals that ended the Super Falcons’ hopes of reaching the World Cup for the first time in their history.

After a goalless first half, Kgatlana broke the deadlock in the 56th minute, finishing calmly after a well-worked counter-attack. Jane doubled the lead in the 77th minute when her shot from inside the box took a deflection and wrong-footed the Nigerian goalkeeper.

Nigeria mounted a late fightback. In stoppage time, Jane was shown a second yellow card and sent off for handball inside the area. Christy Ucheibe converted the resulting penalty in the 93rd minute to give the Super Falcons hope.

Despite intense late pressure, South Africa held on. Goalkeeper Kaylin Swart produced a crucial save in the dying moments to deny Nigeria an equaliser and preserve the victory.

The result means Banyana Banyana advance to the preliminary phase of the FIFA inter-confederation play-offs, keeping their hopes of reaching the 2027 World Cup in Brazil alive. Nigeria, the 10-time African champions and continental favourites heading into the tournament, will miss the global finals for the first time since the competition began.

South Africa now join Ghana as Africa’s representatives in the next stage of the qualification process.
