IBADAN, Nigeria — Former Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) head coach Nurudeen Aweroro has spoken openly about his departure from the club, revealing that he had long anticipated the decision.
In an interview, Aweroro explained that management informed him they no longer wanted him to lead the team into the new NPFL season and the CAF Confederation Cup campaign.
“When they reached out to me that we should mutually agree to part ways, I told the chairman I expected this long time ago. I was told they didn’t want me anymore because I won’t be able to meet the demands of playing in the NPFL and on the continent. And I accepted the decision,” he said.
Aweroro also reflected on the pressure that came with the job, noting that there were disagreements and threats of dismissal even before the previous season fully began. Despite the challenges, he focused on the targets set for the team.
The coach revealed that he chose Shooting Stars over offers from Kano Pillars and Nasarawa United because of his personal connection to Ibadan, where he attended Loyola College. He described chairman Honourable Taiwo Salami as a father figure and recalled being taken to meet Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who expressed the desire for a continental ticket.
Aweroro spent 280 days in charge of Shooting Stars, guiding them to a third-place finish and securing the club’s first continental qualification in 27 years. In 38 league matches under his leadership, the team recorded 18 wins, six draws and 14 defeats.
He also disclosed that his earlier decision to leave Ikorodu City was driven by interference from the club’s technical director at the time.
Aweroro’s comments provide further insight into the circumstances surrounding his exit from the Oluyole Warriors.
