LOS ANGELES, United States — Nneka Ogwumike has announced her retirement from professional basketball after a distinguished 15-year career in the WNBA.
The forward, widely respected as one of the league’s most consistent and accomplished players, leaves the game with an impressive list of honours. She was named WNBA MVP in 2016, the same year she guided the Los Angeles Sparks to the championship. Ogwumike was also crowned WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2012 and earned selection to the WNBA All-Rookie Team.
Her individual accolades include 11 WNBA All-Star appearances, one All-WNBA First Team selection (2016), and seven All-WNBA Second Team honours. On the defensive end she was named to the WNBA All-Defensive First Team four times and the All-Defensive Second Team on three occasions.
Ogwumike’s longevity, leadership and excellence on both ends of the floor cemented her status as one of the standout figures of her generation. She also served as president of the Women’s National Basketball Players Association, earning the affectionate nickname “Madame President” among peers and fans.
Her retirement brings the curtain down on a career defined by consistency, professionalism and significant contributions to the growth of the women’s game.
