MARRAKECH, Morocco — Former Commonwealth Games champion and British athletics coach Leon Baptiste is serving an eight-month prison sentence in Morocco after being convicted of sexually assaulting a minor.
Baptiste, 41, was arrested in Marrakech in May. He was initially sentenced to 10 months before the term was reduced to eight months on appeal. He is currently held at Al-Oudaya prison in the city.
The coach had been working with a group of top British sprinters preparing for the Commonwealth Games and European Championships when he suddenly went out of contact more than three months ago. In May he told the athletes he would be away “for a while” without providing further details.
Reports emerged over the weekend that Baptiste was “missing” in Morocco. An email sent on his behalf later announced his resignation from his coaching position, citing unspecified ill health.
A source at Morocco’s Ministry of Justice confirmed to BBC Sport that Baptiste was arrested, convicted and is serving his sentence. The source stated he was “in good health” and had not disappeared.
Baptiste won the men’s 200m at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. He later coached several prominent British sprinters and worked as a sprint consultant for UK Athletics.
