The 18-year-old got a strong start and held off a late challenge from Jamaica’s Shanoya Douglas, who took silver in 11.17s. Italy’s 16-year-old Kelly Ann Doualla claimed bronze with a time of 11.27s.
Maxwell’s victory marked the first American win in the women’s 100m at the World U20 Championships in a decade and completed a US sweep of the sprint titles after teammate Tate Taylor had earlier won the men’s event.
Competing in front of a home crowd at Hayward Field, Maxwell produced a composed and powerful performance to secure the gold medal.
