KATSINA, Nigeria — Katsina United have released an official club statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of their new signing, Chinedu Ozor.
The club confirmed that Ozor collapsed during a pre-season friendly against Niger Tornadoes at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium in Katsina. Despite immediate medical efforts, he passed away.
In the statement, Katsina United addressed circulating reports that claimed the player later regained consciousness or “came back to life.” The club described those claims as untrue and appealed for an end to speculation.
“We have seen reports claiming that Chinedu later regained consciousness or ‘came back to life.’ We understand that people desperately wanted this to be true. We all did. But sadly, those reports are not true,” the statement read.
The club explained that in the moments after the incident, Ozor’s family, overwhelmed by shock, requested further medical confirmation before his body was taken to the morgue. That desperate hope, the statement emphasised, must not be turned into a narrative that he survived.
“He did not regain consciousness. He passed away,” the club stated firmly.
Katsina United called on the public to stop spreading rumours, false reports and unverified information, stressing that behind every post and headline is a grieving family.
“Behind the name Chinedu Ozor was a son, a brother, a teammate, a friend and a young man whose life meant so much to many people. At this moment, what his family needs is compassion, not speculation. What his teammates need is space to grieve. And what Chinedu deserves is to be remembered with dignity.”
The club concluded by asking for the player to be allowed to rest in peace and prayed for strength for his family during this unimaginable time of loss.
The Nigerian football community continues to mourn the young footballer following his sudden death.
