NAIROBI, Kenya — Gor Mahia lifted the inaugural Green Legacy Cup after defeating newly promoted Migori Youth 4-3 on penalties following a thrilling 2-2 draw in normal time at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday.
The charity final, organised by the Zamzam Foundation Kenya, provided an entertaining curtain-raiser to the new season while raising funds for food security, environmental conservation and community resilience projects across the country.
Entertaining Final
The contest proved far more competitive than many expected. Migori Youth, freshly promoted to the top flight, matched their more established opponents for long periods and at one stage led the match.
Gor Mahia fought back to level the scores, forcing the final into a penalty shootout after the two sides could not be separated in regular time.
In the decisive spot-kick contest, the K’Ogalas held their nerve to prevail 4-3 and claim the trophy.
Charity Focus
Beyond the football, the Green Legacy Cup carried a strong social message. The event was designed to mobilise resources for edible farms, community agriculture initiatives and climate-smart projects aimed at supporting communities affected by food insecurity and climate change.
Gor Mahia officials had earlier underlined the club’s commitment to community engagement, describing the fixture as an opportunity to give back while continuing their pre-season preparations following the CECAFA Kagame Cup campaign.
Positive Start for Both Sides
For Gor Mahia, the victory adds early silverware and provides a confidence boost ahead of the domestic season. The performance also offered valuable match practice after their recent regional commitments.
Migori Youth, despite the defeat, earned plenty of credit for their spirited display against one of Kenya’s most successful clubs. The newly promoted side showed they will be competitive in the top flight and can take pride in pushing the champions all the way to penalties.
The dramatic final at Nyayo Stadium delivered both sporting excitement and a meaningful contribution to national development goals, marking a successful launch of the Green Legacy Cup.
