RENNES, France — Paris Saint-Germain were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw away to Rennes in their Ligue 1 opener on Sunday, as Ferran Torres scored twice in the second half to rescue a point.
Rennes took control early and led 2-0 at half-time. Sebastian Szymanski opened the scoring in the ninth minute, and Esteban Lepaul doubled the advantage before the break.
PSG improved after the interval and began to create more opportunities. Torres pulled one back in the 71st minute and then equalised nine minutes later with his second goal of the evening, completing a rapid comeback.
The result leaves both sides with a point from their first match of the new Ligue 1 campaign. Rennes will be disappointed not to have held on for the victory after establishing a two-goal lead, while PSG will take encouragement from the character shown to fight back from behind.
Torres’ brace proved decisive in securing the draw for the visitors. The Spanish forward’s clinical finishing turned the contest around after a difficult first half for Luis Enrique’s side.
PSG dominated possession for long periods but struggled to convert their territorial advantage until Torres made the difference. Rennes remained dangerous on the counter and defended resolutely for much of the match.
Both teams now turn their attention to the next round of fixtures. The opening-day draw provides an early indication of the competitiveness of the new season, with PSG forced to settle for a share of the spoils on the road.
