Clinton Lawani the Hero as Flying Eagles Reach WAFU-B U-20 Final

YAMOUSSOUKRO, Côte d’Ivoire — Nineteen-year-old goalkeeper Clinton Lawani emerged as the hero of the evening as Nigeria’s Flying Eagles booked their place in the final of the WAFU-B U-20 AFCON Qualifying Tournament.

Lawani, who plays for Sporting Lagos, produced two outstanding back-to-back penalty saves in the shootout as Nigeria defeated Côte d’Ivoire 4-3 on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw.

The young shot-stopper’s decisive interventions proved the difference in a high-stakes semi-final filled with drama. Nigeria had fought back from a first-half deficit, taken the lead late in normal time, and then seen Côte d’Ivoire equalise in extra time to force the shootout.

Lawani has been one of the standout performers for Sporting Lagos, who recently won the Nigeria National League (NNL) title and earned promotion to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL). His consistent displays at club level earned him a call-up to the Flying Eagles squad for the WAFU-B tournament.

The 19-year-old’s heroics ensured Nigeria advanced to the final, where victory would secure automatic qualification for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations and keep alive their hopes of reaching the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
